Custom-Fitted 3D Masks

The Importance of a Peripheral Seal

During this COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Coughlin and Blue Springs Family Dental have explored ways to improve the effectiveness of currently available PPE. While N95 masks will remain the gold standard, the global shortage of these masks made it necessary to explore other options that could improve the function of Level I, II, and III surgical masks.

The key benefit N95 masks offer is the effectiveness of the peripheral seal to ensure air is being filtered through the mask itself, rather than entering or exiting through the periphery of the mask. For example, Level II surgical masks used in our office offer a Particle Filtration Efficiency ≥ 99% at 0.1 micron. According to the FDA, “the ‘N95’ designation means that when subjected to careful testing, the respirator blocks at least 95 percent of very small (0.3 micron) test particles.”¹

An improved peripheral seal around any loose fitting PPE will undoubtedly force more air through the mask, allowing it to filter air more effectively.

Is this for Health Care Workers or the General Population?

Both the general population, as well as health care workers who aren’t currently using N95 masks, would benefit from increased peripheral seal of their current face mask.

Free Bellus3D Face Mask Fitter

The Bellus3D app is Free to use, and allows you to export a STL file which you can use with a 3D printer to fabricate your custom-fitted mask. Visit their website here: Bellus3D Face Mask

Once you download the Bellus3D app in the App Store (iPhone 11, iPhone X, or iPad Pro with FaceID capability), walk through the prompts to create your STL file. Bellus3D App Walk Through

If you’re like 99% of the population without a 3D printer, you can find a printer online to ship to you. Additionally, you can contact our office and we can help connect you with a 3D printer.

Warning: While the Bellus3D fitter seems to improve the seal of a face mask, it has not been tested for effectiveness in preventing COVID-19, and you should use it at your own risk.
